Training in Ramadan: Building Strength Through Discipline

Muslim Revert, Personal Trainer and Strength Coach Liam OBrien

Welcome to our Ramadan Training page at The Angry Vegan Personal Training. Ramadan is a time of reflection, sacrifice, and inner growth; and let's face it, training while fasting can present its own set of challenges. Fasting impacts energy, hydration, and recovery, which means your usual training routine might need a smart tweak.

I, Liam, have studied Islam for many years and will be fasting alongside you, so I truly understand the delicate balance required during this month.

Whether you’re training in our private gym in Huddersfield or joining one of our online sessions, our approach is tailored to keep you strong, safe, and focused. With a few adjustments in training loads, timing, and nutrition, we’re here to help you harness both your physical and spiritual strength during Ramadan.

Let’s face the challenges head on and turn them into opportunities for growth - together.

The Challenges of Training While Fasting.

  • Energy and Fatigue: Fasting means your body isn’t getting its usual fuel throughout the day. You might feel more tired than usual, making your usual heavy lifts or long sessions a bit more of a slog.

  • Hydration Woes: Without water during the daylight hours, dehydration becomes a real risk - especially if you're training in warmer weather (admittedly unlikely here in Yorkshire!).

  • Recovery and Nutrition: With fewer opportunities to refuel, your muscles might not recover as quickly, so you may need to adjust your workout intensity.

  • Timing Troubles: Fitting training sessions around Iftar and Suhoor can be a juggling act, as you try to optimise performance without overtaxing your body.

Adapting Your Training During Ramadan.

  • Timing Your Workouts: Schedule your sessions immediately after Iftar or just before Suhoor, when your body is properly fuelled.

  • Adjusting Intensity: On tougher days, scale back the load - swap heavy lifts for lighter, controlled movements or mobility work.

  • Focusing on Hydration: Prioritise water and electrolyte intake during non-fasting hours to support recovery and maintain performance.

  • Fuelling with Nutrient-Dense Meals: Make sure your Iftar and Suhoor include balanced, nutrient-rich foods to provide sustained energy.

  • Listening to Your Body: Be flexible with your routine; sometimes a gentler approach is exactly what you need to keep progressing while honouring the spirit of Ramadan.
