I’m Liam O’Brien, founder of The Angry Vegan Personal Training and coach at Yorkshire Kettlebell Club in Huddersfield. I’ve spent nearly 20 years coaching strength, drawing on experience in powerlifting, strongman, kettlebell sport, and endurance events. These days, I specialise in helping men over 35 cut through the noise, train properly, and get results that last.
Most of my clients don’t care about Instagram lifts or gym fashion – they want to feel stronger, move better, and know they’re building something solid for the years ahead.

Who I Train
Most of the men I coach are over 35. Some are coming back to training after years away, others are already lifting but want structure and proper progression.
What they all have in common is the need for results that actually carry over into life - more strength for work, sport, and family, better health, and the confidence that comes from knowing you’re capable. I’ve been coaching strength for almost 20 years, after qualifying as a Master Trainer with the European Institute of Fitness in 2006. Along the way I’ve trained and certified with some of the best in the world:

I’ve competed in girevoy sport, strongman, and powerlifting, and taken on marathons and triathlons. That mix of disciplines gives me a broad perspective, but the focus is always the same: strength that lasts. I still train hard myself, still push for progress, and bring that same mindset to every client session.
All of this matters because when you train with me, you’re not just getting a plan from a textbook, you’re getting coaching shaped by years of lifting, competing, and teaching. Every cue, every adjustment, and every session comes from real-world experience, not guesswork.
My Approach to Coaching
Every session has a purpose. I don’t hand out templates or let you guess your way through a workout. Your training is built around where you are now, where you want to be, and the time you’ve got to get there.
We use the tools that actually build strength – barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, and accessory work – coached with attention to form so every rep counts. Progression is steady and structured: adding weight, refining technique, and building resilience week after week.
The result is simple: you get stronger, leaner, and more capable in ways that make a difference outside the gym as well as in it.
