
How We Got Here
The Angry Vegan Personal Training is based at our private gym, Yorkshire Kettlebell Club, in Huddersfield.
The Yorkshire Kettlebell Club name comes from my first gym, where in 2012 I formed and coached the Yorkshire Kettlebell Team – a competitive girevoy sport squad that became one of the UK’s most successful, competing across Europe and winning multiple titles.
The team may be retired, but the name stuck. Every gym I’ve had since has carried the Yorkshire Kettlebell Club identity – a nod to where it all began and the standards we still hold ourselves to today.
The Angry Vegan name came later, after I went fully vegan in 2019 and wanted something that stood out in a crowded fitness industry. The phrase has a recognised meaning in vegan culture – referring to the stage where new vegans often feel frustrated with the world, becoming vocal, activist, and keen to convert others.
I was never quite that militant, but the label stuck for another reason. At 110kg, 182cm tall, bald-headed, with a big bushy white beard, I’ve been told I can look like quite an angry bloke – especially when lifting heavy. The name became a tongue-in-cheek nod to my appearance and my direct, no-nonsense coaching style, while also making a clear statement: our training is serious, effective, and built on principles – in and out of the gym.
Do You Have to Be Vegan to Train Here?
No! Despite the name, The Angry Vegan Personal Training isn’t just for vegans. Around half of our clients eat meat, fish, or dairy – and they get the same results as everyone else. The name is about who we are, not who we train. What matters here is that you’re ready to work hard, follow a structured plan, and commit to getting stronger and healthier. Your diet is your choice – our job is to coach you to the best results possible.

Who We Are
I’m Liam O’Brien, a strength coach with almost 20 years of experience helping men over 35 build lasting strength, resilience, and confidence. My background covers powerlifting, strongman, girevoy sport, marathons, and endurance events – but my focus now is on helping everyday people train with purpose and get stronger for life.
My wife, Fran O’Brien, is a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner with over 20 years of NHS experience and a qualified personal trainer. She specialises in strength training for women over 35, with tailored support for those going through perimenopause and menopause, helping them take control of their health and feel at their best.
Together, we coach from our fully private gym in Huddersfield, giving you the structure, guidance, and accountability you need to make consistent, measurable progress – and keep it for life.
